Rowing NZ selectors have confirmed a men’s quad will not be contesting the 2021 World Rowing Final Olympic Qualification Regatta.

As at 4 February, Rowing NZ do not intend to contest World Rowing Cup regattas due to COVID-19. Instead, crews selected will remain in New Zealand for training and competition ahead of the World Rowing Final Olympic Qualification Regatta and New Zealand Olympic Rowing Team selection. Rowing NZ’s full international travel plans may be viewed here.

The New Zealand Olympic Rowing Team will be announced on 11 June.

Tokyo Olympic Games Qualification

9 New Zealand boats qualified for Tokyo Olympic Games at the 2019 World Rowing Championships: women’s single, women’s double, lightweight women’s double, women’s pair, women’s quad, women’s eight, men’s single, men’s double and men’s pair.

A men’s eight have been selected to contest the 2021 World Rowing Final Olympic Qualification Regatta. The crew need to place in the top two of their field to qualify. In contrast to the World Rowing Championship Olympic qualification system, boats securing qualification through Final Olympic Qualification regattas may not have crew changes between securing qualification and the Olympic Games. If the men’s eight are successful in gaining Olympic qualification, New Zealand will be sending 10 crews to the Tokyo Olympics Games.

The New Zealand Olympic Rowing Team will be announced on 11 June.
