Stars edge Flames in penalties

On the road at Dundee Stars, Flames picked up a table point by getting the evening to overtime and then penalties, but a couple of Stars goals during tiebreakers against a single Flames reply helped the home team edge the 5-4 final.

Flames had an early lead when Brett Ferguson lit the lamp less than 3 minutes into the evening, but Matthew Carter had it tied up at the back end of the frame.

Stars grabbed their first advantage of the contest on a powerplay at 27:24. A Stars own goal credited to Jordan Rowley evened the affair at 37:29, but the home team was back in front less than 2 minutes later through Colton Kroeker.

A little under 4 minutes after re-start, TJ Foster pulled Spectrum’s men back to even terms. A Kruise Reddick strike quickly followed to put Flames ahead, but shortly after back to back Stars powerplays, the Scottish side levelled again with a Drydn Dow marker to send the clubs down the stretch tied on 4 each. Less than 2 minutes from overtime, a tripping call on Foster put the Stars to work with the extra man, but the Flames killed that off and the remaining time of 4 on 3 for the carry over into overtime.

The 4th period didn’t yield a winner so penalties would decide the evening. Egils Kalns got Stars going when he scored on the opener and newcomer Braylon Shmyr answered for Spectrum’s men, but there was no reply to Anthony Beauregard’s ultimate winner.

“On the one hand you get a road point and you go away at least having achieved that,” said Paul Dixon, “but in our current run of results it’s hard not to focus on how close we were to both points here.”

“We came back in the 3rd, and were able to get the lead. Then we killed off 2 penalties in a row as the game was getting to the final stages so we were exactly where you want to be as the game is winding down, but just couldn’t get it over the finish, unfortunately.”

“The guys are frustrated right now, no question. Whatever style the game takes lately, it just seems like if there is break to be had that might make the difference on the night, it’s not falling our way. We can’t let that deter us, and we have to get back home now and be ready for an energetic performance against Belfast Giants.”
