Flyers and Clan take it to the wire

Nolan LaPorte's decisive penalty shot helped take the points for Glasgow Clan as they overcame a tough test in Kirkcaldy to win on penalty shots.

This New Year clash was always going to be different to the game in Glasgow on Hogmanay that saw the Flyers well beaten in a 5-1 scoreline.

This rematch in Kirkcaldy saw them much improved and looked more of a threat as the Clan looked to make it two out of two against their biggest rivals.

The home side got themselves in front as Dylan Quaile sent his shot over Patrick Killeen's shoulder to give Fife the lead halfway through the first period.

The travelling Clan fans looked for a response in the second period and got it when Zack Fitzgerald's side struck early in the season to equalise.

Mike Cazzola was in the penalty box on a cross check penalty, which allowed Clan to take advantage as Rasmus Bjerrum struck from the bottom corner of the face off circle to tie the game at one apiece.

Chances followed from LaPorte and Mathieu Roy forced Morrison into a couple of saves, but there were chances at both ends as the game got more and more interesting.

Despite enjoying a spell of pressure, Fife couldn't make it count and it was Glasgow who eventually got their noses in front when Bjerrum's pass off the back opened up the zone and Jordan Heywood sent a drive into the Flyers net.

Fife were level again early in the third period as James Isaacs struck from the right side, just in front of the blue line, arrowing the puck into the net to make it 2-2.

The game was wide open and the urgency from both teams increased as they looked to get the edge in what was a very competitive game.

Clan killed a massive five-on-three PK as Fife were kept at arms' length and with nine minutes to go, it really could have gone either way.

The breakthrough came with seven minutes to go as Travis Ehrhardt found space at the near post to deliver his wrist shot and Glasgow took a big lead.

Fife pulled Morrison in the final couple of minutes and the gamble paid off for them as Carlo Finucci tucked away a rebound from close range.

Overtime beckoned and the team had to dig deep in the extra period, killing a huge five-on-three penalty, but neither team were able to make the breakthrough.

Clan held their nerve on penalty shots as Mikael Lidhammar and Chad Rau converted their efforts, with LaPorte scoring the one that confirmed the points on a tense night in Fife.
