4 - 3 Penalty win secures quarter-final place for Flames

Flames grabbed a group topping, Challenge Cup quarter final clinching win by erasing a 2 goal deficit in the last 20 plus minutes to take a 3-3 tie into overtime then penalties at Cardiff Devils where goals by Ian Watters and TJ Foster secured a 4-3 win.

At 6:42, the visitors took a lead on the powerplay with the only goal of the period off the stick of Watters; his first of a pair in regulation time.

Just a tick over 5 minutes into the middle frame Joey Martin drew the home side level with his marker during a man advantage stretch. At 29:10 another powerplay put them in front thanks to Sean McMonagle. A 37th minute Matias Sointu strike had them up by a pair, but a 2nd goal by Watters on another powerplay just 4 seconds from period time made it a single goal affair in time for the final stanza.

As the game approached the halfway mark of the 3rd, Spectrum’s men pulled fully even through Cam Braes and with no further scoring through the set, extra time was needed to settle the evening.

A 4th period of 3 on 3 solved nothing so penalty tiebreakers were the order of the day where Travis Fullerton stopped 4 of 5 free shots, allowing only a Joey Haddad goal that was outnumbered by the pair of Flames deciding strikes.
