17yr pld Cooper signs two-way deal with Flames

Former Guildford Jr skater and GB U16 Defenceman Sam Cooper has agreed a 2 way arrangement with Guildford Flames. The 17 year old will ice with Romford Raiders U18 and NIHL sides, but when available will be eligible to represent Spectrum’s tenants.

The 6’2”, 175lb native of Portsmouth skated with Guildford U15’s and 18’s from 2017-2018 through 2019-2020. During that last term he also added 7 games with Coventry Blaze in U20’s where he had a goal and 4 assists in 7 starts and was a GB U16 selection to the Riga Cup squad.

“While we are still looking for a 6th Defenceman, we have had Sam out at training, and since putting his first practice nerves to the side, he has made a very good accounting of himself in competition that is a very big jump from where he has been playing,” said Paul Dixon.

“He has been able to keep up to the pace and has shown he can move the puck.”

“With us still seeking the right fit for our last roster spot, and with the reality that this season could see some roster shortages on some occasions, it makes sense to be able to be able to call on someone like Sam when he is available, and the fact that he is a product of our own programme is an added bonus.”

“He is available this weekend, and if all the details are done, we could see him in the lineup for the Coventry Cup openers.”
