Richards and Essex agree new deal

Essex Cricket is delighted to announce that Jamal Richards has put pen to paper on a new deal with the Club, his maiden Senior contract with Essex.

The all-rounder who was born in Edmonton joined the Essex Academy at the age of eleven, progressing though the player pathway, making his Second XI debut in 2021 where he played 12 games bowling 44 overs and taking 9 wickets at 28.56.

He is the latest quick bowler to have graduated through the Club’s Academy system, following in the footsteps of Jamie Porter, Aaron Beard and Sam Cook. Richards has recently featured for the England U19 side in Australia where he played in all four games against the Australian youngsters.

After re-signing for the Club, Richards said: “It’s great to be able sign a new deal with Essex! I’ve been at the Club for nine years now and I’m delighted to call this place home.

“After having a taste of first team cricket over the last few seasons, I’m motivated to work hard in order to achieve more. The fans have been amazing and very supportive of me ever since I began my senior career, and I can’t wait to repay them this season.”

Head Coach, Anthony McGrath added: “Jamal is one of the brightest talents on the County circuit, so we’re thrilled to have him re-sign. He has raw pace with ball in hand and can hit it a long way with the bat too.

“He has shown moments of brilliance when featuring in our One Day Cup side, and we’re all really excited to see him perform in an Essex shirt again soon.”
