Battle lines drawn on opening day of Aon University Sevens Series
Macquarie University have emerged as the team to beat after an intense first day of the 2018 Aon University Sevens Series at University of Tasmania in Hobart on Saturday, after they knocked off defending champions University of Queensland, 21-7.
The ten competing Universities descended on Hobart for the first of the five-round series to vie for supremacy in the battle for the 2018 Championship.
In Pool B in became a battle between tournament newcomers, the University of Sydney and Griffith University jostling for top position, with the final pool match on Sunday to decide the top of Pool B.
Teams will return to UTAS, Hobart campus, Rugby Fields tomorrow for the final Pool matches before heading to the Finals to decide series points for round one.
Macquarie University Rays Head Coach, Nath McMahon said: “We were pleased to go through day one undefeated in the opening round.
“University of Queensland were the form team in 2017, so for our girls to get the win was pleasing.
“We were focusing on winning three games and all it has done is set us up for day two when the real competition starts.”
