Win for the Devils in overtime

Chris Gerrie scored a 51st minute powerplay goal and Kevin Lindskoug turned aside 29 shots to secure a cup point, but an early 3 on 3 overtime goal by Brodie Reid lifted the Cardiff Devils to a 3-2 win over the visiting Flames.

Flames weathered a lot of early pressure, including killing a penalty just a few minutes in, to carry a scoreless period into the late stages where Ian Watters converted a powerplay at 16:13 for a lead. It was short-lived, however, thanks to Mark Richardson who knotted it just 79 seconds later to ensure the 2nd would begin with the clubs on level terms.

The middle set also saved the scoring for late, but it was just the one goal with Devils ahead through 40 minutes on the strength of a Brandon McNally powerplay strike at 36:10.

Gerrie’s mid-3rd period leveller was the final goal of regulation ahead of Reid’s winner 40 seconds into the extra frame.

“I thought early on Kevin did a really good job of holding us in it for probably first 10 minutes or so,” Head Coach Paul Dixon said.

“We definitely got stronger as the game went on, and we looked much better after the opening half period or so for most of the rest of the game, and overall we have to be pleased with our game, despite coming up a little short in the end.”

“Most of the things we could pick on ourselves for, like poise on the puck and maybe a few giveaways that were unforced, are things that should get better just with more repetition as we get deeper in the season. You could definitely see where Cardiff was maybe a bit more polished in certain aspects, but in time we should be able to clean some of that up and hopefully be able to turn a game like this into a win.”

“We will now try to get back home and see what we can do to hopefully open our league campaign with both points when Manchester visit Sunday night.”
