Steelers win increases woes for theClan

Glasgow Clan 0 Sheffield Steelers 3

Glasgow Clan, sponsored by Aspray Glasgow West, fell short in their home Premier Sports Elite League opener against Sheffield Steelers, who ran out 3-0 victors from Braehead Arena.

The physical tone for the game was set early in the first period as both sides endured a gruelling opening 20 minutes littered with big hits and big chances.

The first big chance of the game came for Steelers’ forward Evan Mosey, who was slipped through for a one-on-one with Zack Driscoll, but the Clan netminder came up big and kept the score line level with a safe catch of the puck before freezing play.

This was just the start of an outstanding performance from Driscoll, which saw him claim Clan man of the match at the end of the night.

The second period started on level terms but quickly elevated in Sheffield’s favour as Brandon Whistle slapped the loose puck into the home net after a confusing spell of play.

LaPorte and Whistle contested a tough battle which saw Clan’s #37 go down at the boards, but the Sheffield man managed to squeeze the puck into the net.

Momentum continued to build for Sheffield as they picked up a second goal not long after to double their lead.

A fast-paced attack from Aaron Fox’s men put the Clan on the back foot in their defensive zone, with Scott Allen getting a redirect on Brett Neumann’s shot to double the visitors’ lead.

The third period saw the Clan get into a more promising flow of play as threats on the Steelers’ net began to pile up.

Greenfield was called into action continuously throughout as he tipped Gary Haden’s wrist shot onto the crossbar.

However the Steelers eventually dealt their final blow in the final minutes as Jonathan Phillips blazed a saucer from the Steelers’ zone into the empty net just as Clan put out the extra attacker in hopes of clawing back their two-goal deficit.

The Clan now face a tough away double header starting with a trip to Cardiff Devils on Saturday.
