Panthers apply the pressure

Glasgow Clan picked up a point on the road at Nottingham Panthers, but were edged out in overtime in a keenly fought Elite League contest.

Clan were looking to bounce back after going down 5-1 to Sheffield Steelers in the Challenge Cup on Wednesday and faced a Panthers side just back from winning a silver medal at the Continental Cup at the weekend.

There was no doubt it was a tough test for Zack Fitzgerald's side and the coach decided to change things by starting Jordan McLaughlin in goal instead of Patrick Killeen.

Glasgow had some good looks in the opening stages as they started well, with Scott Pitt and Rasmus Bjerrum causing some issues early on.

McLaughlin did well to make an instinctive stop from Julian Talbot as Panthers tried one up the other end and both teams were warming up in what was a relatively slow start.

Panthers were first on the board after nine minutes when Georg Golovkovs set up Brett Perlini, who tapped the puck into the gaping net.

The lead lasted only a couple of minutes when Clan were back on level terms as Scott Tanski's pass found Matt Stanisz and he tucked it away from the back post for his second goal of the season.

Nottingham almost restored the lead early in the second period as Jake Hansen was sprung on a breakaway, but McLaughlin showed great composure to deny him.

The home side looked very much on top in the opening exchanges of the middle session as they tried to find a way through.

However it was Clan who added the second goal as Chad Rau was in the right place to force the puck home against the run of play, to the delight of the travelling fans.

Four minutes later, it was Panthers who were level as Sam Herr's low shot from Mark Matheson's pass went underneath McLaughlin and the game was all square at two.

The game was on a knife edge going into the third period and Clan were denied by a double save from home goalie Kevin Carr in the opening minutes.

Golovkovs was also denied as he burst through the centre, but the young netminder stood his ground and swept the puck away from the danger zone.

Nolan Laporte found himself clean through on Carr, but his glove side shot struck the post and the Panthers fans were able to breathe again.

Both sides played to a stalemate and the game moved into overtime, but Panthers, with a four-on-three powerplay advantage took the extra point as Hansen swept in from the inside left.
