OT win for Flames on home ice

It was a defeat, but it was a big point on the road as Glasgow Clan were edged out 2-1 after overtime against Guildford Flames at the Spectrum.

It was a tough, but valiant effort from the Clan in a venue where they've won once in six previous visits against a team on a run of six victories in their last seven.

Zack Fitzgerald's men took some time to get going in the first period as the Flames looked to take an early advantage, but couldn't find a way through in the opening exchanges.

Nolan Laporte went close on a couple of occasions, firing wide with his first chance then hitting his shot into the side nets a minute or so later.

Then Craig Peacock and Matt Stanisz both tested Travis Fullerton in Guildford's net as Glasgow began to find their rhythm.

Mikael Lidhammar was next to test the Flames goalie as Scott Pitt set him up, but Fullerton was quick to read the play and killed the move dead with a cover.

Clan's period of pressure came to an end as Guildford found their way up the other end and John Dunbar and Ian Watters caused problems, but Patrick Killeen was on top form for Clan.

However, Guildford made their chance count on the powerplay as Brett Ferguson fired into the net from just outside the face off, just in front of the crease and the home side were in front.

The second period started at a fast pace with Killeen called up to make a big save, while Fullerton was in top form to deny Matt Haywood's shot.

Clan upped their game and a good effort from Jack Musil at the hash marks needed another big stop from Fullerton. The small contingent of travelling fans sensed something was coming.

And it duly did as Haywood found the net with an effort in front of the crease and the game was tied at one apiece by the end of the middle session.

The game was on a knife edge and there wasn't much between them and the third reflected this more with chances at both ends.

Fullerton denied Roy, while Killeen was at full stretch to deny Flames, but no goal could be found as the clock ticked down.

Peacock was close with three to go, but it was as much regulation time could yield as the game moved into the overtime period.

Flames pushed and pushed, pinning the Clan back in their own zone for much of the extra time and when Calle Ackered found a way through, it was game over, but the consolation of a point was something to take from the long trip to Surrey in the end.
