Flames celebrate Cup win over Devils

In Cup action, Eamon McAdam made 39 stops and an unanswered goal in each of the first 2 periods put Flames in a 2 goal lead through 40 minutes that helped lift them to a 3-2 road win at Cardiff Devils.

After striking the OT winner Saturday night, Bradley Lalonde picked up the next one also when he kicked off the scoring in the 9th minute to set Flames to a lead they would hold through the end of the frame.

Just beyond the game’s halfway mark, Ben O’Connor bagged his first goal in Flames gear and the visitors were 2 goals to the good at the close of the 2nd.

Just 2 minutes after re-start, Devils cut their deficit in half through Riley Brandt, but Daniel Tedesco re-stored the 2 goal spread on a powerplay at 48:36. After killing a couple of late penalties, Devils pulled netminder Taran Kozun for an extra attacker and also went to the powerplay to double their manpower differential where they netted a 2nd with 5 seconds remaining, but they would get no closer in the Flames win.

The hosts outshot Flames 41-30 with Kozun making 27 saves for the Devils.

“That’s a big win coming here for a 2nd time in about a week and getting another win against a league powerhouse team like Cardiff’, explained Paul Dixon.

“After a pretty even game in the first couple of periods they had far more of the play and pressure in the 3rd. Thankfully we already had a lead, and Eamon was really strong at the back to make sure we would still come out of there with a win.”

“It has put us in a terrific early Cup table position with 3 wins in first 3 starts so we we can be pleased with that for a night before we start to gear up this week for next weekend's double home and away with Fife Flyers.”
