On home ice the Flames gathered a Cup table point, but had a 3-1 lead only to end up in overtime where Gleason Fournier’s tiebreaker early in the 4th period lifted the Cardiff Devils to a 4-3 win.

Less than 30 seconds into the evening Cardiff Devils jumped in front on a Stephen Dixon strike. Back to Back Flames 5 on 3 powerplays shortly thereafter were a good chance to quickly pull even, but Spectrum’s men couldn’t get back to level. Later in the frame, Travis Fullerton was put to the test when Cardiff Devils were awarded a penalty shot but the effort rang off the bar and the score remained 1-0 through the opening frame.

A couple of minutes into the 2nd, John Dunbar evened the count at a goal each and in the 26th minute Calle Ackered had the home team in front on a powerplay. A Corbin Baldwin blast just past the halfway mark made it a 2 goal lead, but a reply by Charles Linglet on a Devils powerplay a little over 2 minutes later pulled the visitors within a single which is where things stood through 40 minutes.

A little over 8 minutes into the 3rd, Sam Jardine squared it for Devils and that closed the regulation scoring forcing an extra period of 3 on 3 where the Devils banked the extra Cup point at 61:36.

“It is gut wrenching to lose that game,” admitted Paul Dixon. “We gave it a good run for a lot of the night against a very good side, and to have been in front 3-1 makes it even more disappointing.”

“Having said that, we have to look at the big picture that we did get a point and we have to be pretty happy with what we did out there with a few less bodies than we are used to.”

“We will get back to practice tomorrow and hopefully we will get a guy or two back for the weekend and see if we can move ourselves back into the win column.”
