Successive wins for Pride over Hurricanes
Contrasting half-centuries from their captain Jonathan Carter and opener Leniko Boucher powered Barbados Pride to their second successive win over Leeward Islands Hurricanes in three days in the Colonial Medical Insurance Super50 Cup on Friday.
Carter led the way with 69 at better than a run a ball and Player-of-the-Match Boucher gathered 68 from 76 balls, sharing 117 – unbroken – for the second wicket to lead the Pride’s successful chase of 185 in their Group A game at the Conaree Cricket Centre on the outskirts of the St. Kitts capital.
Boucher formalised the result off the third ball of the 31st over, when he drove Jeremiah Louis through cover for two, giving the Pride their second win over the Hurricanes, following a 32-run victory on Wednesday at Warner Park in the heart of the St. Kitts capital.
The result placed the Pride firmly in first place in the group with four wins out of the five matches and a total of 16 points, and the Hurricanes remain second on 12 points following successive wins in their first three matches.
Pride were given a sound foundation in the chase, when Boucher and fellow opener, left-hander Kjorn Ottley capitalised on the placid pitch and sultry conditions to put on 56 – unbroken –for the first wicket with little trouble before the visitors suffered a setback.
Ottley essayed a hook at a short delivery from pacer Quinton Boatswain and was struck on the side of his helmet.
He received medical attention on the field, but under the terms of the CWI concussion protocol, he was ushered off by Pride physio Jacqui King and an attending, local physician for further observation. Fortunately, he never had to return.
Carter arrived and played as freely as he usually does and together with Boucher guided the Pride over the finish line.
Earlier, Kieran Powell batted with typical aplomb to lead all scorers in the game with a resolute 88 from 120 balls for the Hurricanes, after they were put into bat.
Powell struck nine fours and one six, but he got little support from the rest of the Hurricanes batting, and the hosts were bowled out for 184 in 46.2 overs.
Hurricanes captain Jahmar Hamilton made 32 and Terance Warde got 24, but no other batsman reached 20.
Pacer Roshon Primus was the pick of the Pride bowlers, ending with 4-47 from 7.2 overs, and off-spinner Ashley Nurse bagged 2-29 from eight overs.
The home team stumbled to 43 for four in the 15th over before Powell anchored successive half-century stands with Hamilton and Warde that beefed up the total.
Powell shared 68 with Hamilton and 51 with Warde before he was caught behind from a top-edged hook at a short delivery from Primus, wicketkeeper Tevyn Walcott running back almost 30 yards and turning to haul in the catch.
The Hurricanes lower order, however, proved brittle and the hosts lost their last four wickets for 13 in the space of 14 balls.
