NSW Breakers name three potential debutants

The NSW Breakers have named three potential debutants in its squad to play Tasmania and Western Australia at North Sydney Oval on Tuesday and Thursday.

Victories over both Tasmania and Western Australia this week will ensure the Breakers host the Women’s National Cricket League Final as the side pushes for a record 21st WNCL title. Western Australia sits second on the ladder just one point behind NSW, with Tasmania sitting in fifth place.

Teenagers Hannah Darlington, Maddy Darke and Anika Learoyd are the three potential debutants named by head coach Dom Thornely.

Darlington has been rewarded for a breakout WBBL season with the Sydney Thunder where she was named the Rebel WBBL|05 Young Gun, while Learoyd has been recognised for a strong Women’s NSW Premier Cricket season and her performances for ACT/NSW Country at the recent Female Under 18 National Championships where she finished as the leading run-scorer with 384 runs at 42.67.

Darke, who was named in the Breakers’ squad which defeated Queensland and ACT in late January, is also in line to make her debut.

All-rounder Lisa Griffith will captain the NSW side.

Speaking ahead of the potentially season defining games against Tasmania and Western Australia this week, Thornely said he was looking for continued improvements from his young chargers.

“We have continued to improve with a successful trip to Canberra last week and what pleases us most is the team have agreed we are still to complete the perfect game,” Thornely said.

“It’s always encouraging that we are winning matches whilst still not satisfied with our performances. Our youth continues to play important roles and the energy around practice this week has indicated the players are ready to take on Tasmania and Western Australia at North Sydney Oval.”

Thornely said the search for continual improvement from both his younger and senior players was particularly pleasing.

“We have a few new faces in our squad this week, and as it has been this season, it’s exciting to see some potential debutants join the Breakers family,” Thornely explained.

“The belief of our squad is most pleasing with young players coming in and performing whilst our regular players are making solid contributions with bat and ball. The team are learning along the way whilst seeking improvement, that is what pleases us the most at present.”
