USRowing Names 2019 Under 23 Selection Camp Invitees

USRowing is pleased to announce that the following athletes have been invited to participate at the 2019 Under 23 Men’s and Women’s National Team Selection Camps this summer.

Spearheaded by the University of Virginia’s Head Coach Kevin Sauer, the women’s camp will select the U23 women’s eight, four, quadruple sculls and four with coxswain that will compete at the 2019 World Rowing Under 23 Championships scheduled for July 24-28 in Sarasota-Bradenton, Florida. The camp also will select a pair to race at USRowing’s Under 23 World Championship Trials in early July. The camp will be held at the Thomas Temple Allan Boathouse in Charlottesville, VA. Sauer will be joined by Brett Gorman (USRowing), Jamie Snider(Yale University assistant coach), Josh Gautreau (University of Washington assistant coach), and Kelsie Chaudoin (Stanford University assistant coach) to coach the sweep selection camp. Kate Bertko (Stanford University lightweight head coach) will lead the sculling side of the camp with the assistance of Susan Francia(UCSD). Last year, the women’s four with coxswain and women’s pair both won gold medals, while the eight won a bronze medal training out of West Windsor, N.J.

Held in Seattle under the direction of the University of Washington men’s head coach Michael Callahan, the men’s camp will select the U.S. representatives in the U23 men’s eight, four and four with coxswain. Now in his 15th year at the University of Washington, Callahan has helped establish Washington as an indomitable force in the world of rowing, developing countless athletes into U23 national team members and Olympians. In the past two Olympiads, 10 of his student-athletes have represented the U.S. in the Olympics. In 2018, he coached the U23 men’s eight to a gold medal in Poland, setting an under 23 world record. Also, Callahan coached U23 men’s eight to gold in 2008, the men’s coxed four to silver in 2012 and bronze in 2017. He will be joined by University of Washington assistant coach, Sergio Espinoza, Carlos Dinares and Sam Dommer, a 2016 Olympian in the U.S. men’s eight.

Held in Boston under the direction of Boston University lightweight women’s head coach Malcolm Doldron, the lightweight women’s camp will select the lightweight women’s quadruple sculls crew that will race at the 2019 World Rowing Under 23 Championships. Now in his seventh season as head coach of the Boston University lightweight women’s program, Doldron led the Terriers to the 2016 Eastern Sprints overall championship title and finished as national runner-up at the IRA National Championship Regatta in both 2016 and 2017. He will be assisted by Princeton University’s assistant coach Molly Hamrick. Last year, the lightweight women’s quad finished sixth at the 2018 World Rowing Under 23 Championships.

The lightweight men’s camp will be held in Princeton, N.J., with Princeton University’s Bill Manning serving as head coach. He will be assisted by Dartmouth College’s Trevor Michelson. The camp will select the lightweight men’s quadruple sculls crew that will race in Sarasota-Bradenton and will explore possible combinations in the lightweight double sculls, lightweight pair and lightweight single sculls to race at the 2019 USRowing Under 23 World Championships Trials. Last year, the lightweight men’s quad won a bronze medal at the 2018 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Poznan, Poland.

In addition to the crews selected through these camps, the remaining boats will be named to the Under 23 National Team through the trials process. The following athletes have been invited to participate in selection camp. This list does not preclude additional athletes from being invited at the Head Coach’s discretion based on the criteria set forth in the 2019 Senior Team Selection Procedures.
