Overtime win for Giants

The Stena Line Belfast Giants defeated the Nottingham Panthers away on Sunday, coming from 2-0 down to claim a 3-2 overtime victory. Darcy Murphy’s vital goal at 63:40 completed a famous comeback as the Giants made it a four point weekend following Saturday’s 4-3 overtime win in Manchester.

Trailing 2-0 after 43 minutes, powerplay strikes from Darcy Murphy and Dustin Johner brought the Giants into overtime before Murphy’s winner saw the Giants join the Panthers and Flyers on 20 points at the top of the Elite League.

The Giants started with Tyler Beskorowany in goal and were missing Jonathan Ferland, Francis Beauvillier, Mark Garside, Colin Shields, Pat Dwyer, Matt Towe, Jim Vandermeer and Andrew Dickson.

Nottingham Take Early Lead

Brett Perlini’s classy one-timer off Tim Billingsley’s pass saw the home side take an early lead with a powerplay goal at 8:51.

The Giants defence, backstopped by Beskorowany, stood up to the Panthers pressure in the first period as they outshot the visitors 14-5.

Panthers Extend Advantage

The Giants came into the game more in the middle period however Michael Garnett in the Nottingham net kept the Belfast side out for a second straight period.

However the Panthers doubled their lead at 25:56 when Dylan Olsen, assisted by Mark Hurtubise and Luke Pither, scored a second powerplay goal for the home side.

Giants Start The Comeback

With only 14 fit skaters - a two goal deficit in Nottingham during the second game of the weekend seemed like a tall order for the Giants. However the remarkable comeback began at 43:34 as Darcy Murphy punished the Panthers during a 5-on-3 powerplay, assisted by David Rutherford and Josh Roach.

The Giants tied up the game only 74 seconds later as Dustin Johner silenced the Nottingham arena with a powerplay strike, assisted by Curtis Leonard and Josh Roach.
