Flames defeat Clan in Overtime

With a table point in hand after a 1-1 regulation tie, the Flames weathered an early overtime penalty kill then resumed 3 on 3 until Jesse Craige delivered a perfect cross ice tap in for Ian Watters to secure a 2-1 win on home ice over Glasgow Clan.

A Flames penalty just over 5 minutes into the contest put the Clan powerplay to work and they closed the arrangements when Guillaume Doucet’s in close one timer had them in front, and they retained that slim advantage through the end of the frame.

In the 2nd, the Flames had a couple of powerplay chances of their own but were unable to capitalize, and after the contestants evenly split 22 period shots, they closed out another 20-minute segment still on working to the 1-0 score.

It looked like the evening may time out with no further offence until Jordan Abt woke up the home crowd when he hammered home a Kevin King faceoff win just under 6 minutes out and that was enough for a table point each, and an extra period where Watters bagged the winner.

“It seemed like a bit of a hard slog for us in the 1st period especially, and they definitely had most of the play at that stage” explained Head Coach Paul Dixon.

“We improved as the night went on, and I thought we were better in the 3rd. That is when we had our higher end opportunities to pull it even, but for a lot of the night it just seemed like the puck was a few inches too far away, and it looked like we may never get on the board.”

“Luckily Jordan was able to get a lot on a shot to at least get a point, and then a great play by all 3 guys on the ice in overtime to make the most of a chance and take the win.”
